Project Overview
Produced for Nish Media and APTN, this documentary explores the rich cultural traditions of Indigenous tattooing through the stories of artists dedicated to preserving ancestral knowledge.
Produced in connection with the Skindigenous documentary series, this short film profiles Alfredo Arcos Vázquez, a traditional Mayan stone carver in Chiapas, Mexico.
Through personal reflection and observational documentary storytelling, Alfredo shares memories of growing up with very little, learning by watching master artisans from a distance, and discovering the traditions and spiritual meaning behind Mayan stone carving. The film follows Alfredo as he creates intricate pieces by hand and reflects on the importance of preserving cultural knowledge for future generations. For him, the work is more than craftsmanship. It is a way of keeping Mayan history, identity and tradition alive for children who will carry that culture forward.
More than a film about tattooing, it is a story about preserving history, honoring ancestors, and ensuring that Indigenous traditions continue to inspire future generations.
Skindigenous: Mexico shows how documentary filmmaking can preserve culture, identity and personal experience in a way that helps audiences understand traditions through the people who continue to carry them forward.
